Nestlé Healthy Kids and National Nutrition Week

Nestlé Healthy Kids and Department of Basic Education partner for National Nutrition Week To celebrate this year’s National Nutrition Week (09 – 15 October 2015), the Department of Basic Education (DBE) and the Nestlé Healthy Kids (NHK) progamme embarked on a two-province nutrition education campaign aimed at addressing the prevalence of excessive weight gain and obesity among school-going children under the theme “Eating healthy at School.”

On 13 and 15 October 2015, Nestlé Healthy Kids and the DBE rolled out nutrition education activations at Mbatini Primary School in Mkhuhlu Village (Mpumalanga) and SS Madikane Primary School in Kuyasa Township, outside Colesberg (Northern Cape Province). Both activations collectively touched and reached over 2000 learners, educators and food handlers. This annual campaign forms part of the National Schools Nutrition Programme (NSNP), a flagship programme of the DBE.

The activations included activities such as soccer, netball, touch-rugby, various indigenous games, flash-mob hola hoops, Cook-A-Thon and a boot camp physical exercise training session. Motshidisi Mokwena, Group Public Affairs Executive, had the following to say about the activations:

“We are proud to be associated with this campaign that seeks to improve the lives of young children through education of proper nutrition and physical activity. We are also thrilled that the National Nutrition Week campaign resonates and complements our company’s endeavours to create long term shared value in all communities where we do business.”
